Sugar Spells by Lola Dodge

Lola Dodge delivers a sweet follow-up through her next book in the Spellwork Syndicate series. Sugar Spells is fun, magical, and everything I wanted from the previous book and more!

After her run-in with a jealous warlock, apprentice baker Anise Wise can’t wait to get back the kitchen where she belongs. But thanks to her brush with death, the land of the living isn’t all cupcakes and marshmallows.

Anise’s magical mojo is way out of whack and her evolving powers are stirring up trouble. As the town buzzes with news that Anise can bake deathly spells, unsavory characters start lining up for a taste. They’ll stop at nothing for the chance to use Anise and her witchcraft to further their own plots.

She plans to hole up researching magic recipes until the attention dies down, but then she discovers the horrifying terms of her bodyguard’s contract. Wynn has saved her life so many times, she can’t leave him trapped. But doing the right thing will mean risking death or worse – being cast out of her dream job.

The story begins right where Deadly Sweet ended and we find that Anise is now at odds with her magic after the previous events occurred. She’s finally found a sense of home and feels more like herself than she ever has, but now she’s afraid she’ll have to leave the bakery because of this magic she possess.

“Is there anything else I can do?” “Live,” Peggy said. “Dance, kiss, love and don’t fixate on what’s wrong. If you can be passionately yourself, death will never hold sway over you.”

It was easy to dive back into this world Lola Dodge has created and follow along with the story. I felt for Anise and how she’s constantly finding herself in trouble, but at the same time I loved reading about her magic in this book. There were certain areas in the first book where I wanted more from the magic descriptions, but in Sugar Spells there were fantastic explanations behind everything! Lola Dodge’s writing continues to grow and that makes me super excited to read the next book in this series!

And the baking!! We get to see a different side to Anise’s baking this time around. Her new magic helps her create what she describes as “killer Oreos” and it strangely made me want to eat some? You’ll understand why that’s weird once you read the book.. But in all seriousness, you probably shouldn’t read Sugar Spells while hungry. 😉

As usual, the girl power and friendships in this series are on point. But the most interesting part of this book was the relationship between Anise and Wynn, her bodyguard. We learn more about mysterious Wynn and his back story as the story progresses and I loved it all.

“When we get out of here, I’ll take you to a real movie. A comedy. And we’ll eat all the snacks.” We popped out of the tunnel I hadn’t paying attention to and Wynn paused to look back at me. His lips tilted in the rarest of Wynn-spressions. A smile. “Promise?”

Anise learns the truth of how the two of them are connected and what the terms of his Shield contract are. And with that, they form a somewhat friendship as they try to achieve the same goal of releasing him from his duties. This is really when the story started to pick up for me. Honestly, if Anise and Wynn end up together this has got to be one of my favorite slow-burn romances EVER. (Thank you, Lola.)

“You think you can experience what you experience and not be changed? You went through the fire again, cupcake. Never expect things to be the same on the other side.”

Overall, I really enjoyed this book! It was the perfect weekend read when I needed a quick escape from the world. I recommend it to anyone looking for some magic in their lives!

Iseult + Aeduan Playlist

Calling all #Witchlanders fans! While we all patiently wait for Bloodwitch to be released, I’ve been working on a playlist for Iseult and Aeduan (AKA my ABSOLUTE favorites). It’s taking me months to perfect my selection of songs, but I’m finally finished with it and I’m super excited to share it with others! These are all songs that remind me of Iseult, Aeduan, both of them, scenes from the books, moments I hope to read about one day, etc. 😉

Heartstruck by Angeli E. Dumatol

Heartstruck by Angeli E. Dumatol

Being a teenager is rough. It’s the time one discovers the meaning of friendship and love, and the journey they take to finding out where they fit in this world. Heartstruck delivers a relatable story about all these things, and most importantly, learning how to accept everything that makes you who you are.

heartstruck_romanceclassflickerHeartstruck (Flicker #1) by Angeli E. Dumatol

Seventeen-year-old Alexa Zamora looks as if she’s always been the beautiful and graceful center of attention. If you knew her in grade school though, you’d remember a sad little girl, who had lost her parents, and spent most of her time on the martial art arnis – a rough sport, not something girls were supposed to like. If you knew her then, you might have ostracized her for it.

She learned from this mistake, and has done her best to hide all traces of her sport and skill in a new school, and now she’s New Hope Academy’s It Girl. But transfer student Theo Guevarra, who happens to be her old arnis buddy and first love, arrives and makes her question the life she’s been living. How long can she keep up appearances, before it all falls apart?

Alexa Zamora is the girl everyone wants to be or be best friends with. She’s intelligent, beautiful, and caring, but it’s only one piece of who she truly is. We quickly learn that there is more than what meets the eye as Alexa sheds off her mask after school hours to secretly continue her arnis training.

“It is only during these few hours with Tito Tim that I feel free to be myself, to let go of all the walls I’ve built. I am free to strike.”

I absolutely ADORED Alexa! I saw so much of my younger self in her that I wanted to protect her with my whole being. Readers will find her to be a relatable character because I think everyone has had a time in their life where they’ve had to wear a mask and hide their true selves from others. Whether it’s to protect ourselves or the people around us, we’ve all been in Alexa’s shoes. She only wants to be accepted and loved.

Just as Alexa feels as if she has her new life under control, someone from her past appears. Enter Theo (swoon). Theo is Alexa’s childhood friend who also trains in arnis and is the only one at her new school that knows anything about her previous life.

Alexa and Theo are the SWEETEST. I’m a huge fan of childhood friends to lovers trope and Heartstruck brings the feels between these two! But outside of the romance, the friendship rooted in their relationship is the best part. Through the bond they share, Alexa is able to grow in other ways. She discovers what it truly means to be a friend and how love can trump all.

“I’ve been wearing a mask to get people to like me, but all it’s done is keep me from seeing the truth.”

Angeli E. Dumatol weaves everything I love about YA perfectly through her writing. There’s family, friendship, and love all inside of Alexa’s journey. And the arnis scenes set this book apart from other YA books. The choreography being described made me feel as if I was watching Alexa in real life! I loved it.

If you’re looking for a quick, sweet weekend read then Heartstruck is for you! Readers are sure to connect with these characters and their story of finding where they belong.
